Mr. Zhang has just returned home after more than 10 days of travel, when a business partner visited to consult about the repair of vertical mill rollers. The company runs a 5000 t/d cement clinker production line, equipped with a 56.4 Loesche mill for raw meal preparation. Part of its mill rollers has suffered wear, yet direct replacement is considered costly and uneconomical, so the enterprise aims to repair the rollers on its own.

In view of this, Mr. Zhang shared his professional recommendations. Generally, there are 2 feasible solutions for repairing worn vertical mill rollers:
1. If the vertical mill roller uses medium carbon steel as the base body and high‑chromium cast iron for the wear‑resistant liner, the liner shall be replaced with a new one once worn to a specified limit.
2.If the wear‑reserved section of the vertical mill roller is made of medium carbon steel, and its outer diameter is built up with hardfacing welding wire or electrode to the required dimension, re‑hardfacing can be performed when this layer wears down to a certain extent. Hardfacing repair includes two methods: on‑site repair and off‑site repair.
On‑site repair requires no disassembly or assembly, with hardfacing equipment directly installed on the mill. This method cuts down the time for disassembly and assembly, and is suitable for small‑area patching. Extensive on‑site repair, however, will lead to long downtime. Besides, without on‑site heat treatment facilities, local heating may easily cause cracking of the high‑chromium cast iron base material.
To ensure stable and reliable hardfacing quality, off‑site repair is the optimal solution. The mill roller is disassembled and sent to a professional manufacturer for standardized hardfacing repair, guaranteeing qualified and durable results.
Before adopting the off‑site repair solution, cement enterprises are suggested to prepare a set of spare rollers in stock, so as to maintain the normal operation of the clinker firing system.
